Through my daily interactions with my peers in Shanghai, and a service-learning experience helping "sweet potato mothers" sell sweet potatoes in Taipei, I experienced "victim-blaming" of homeless people firsthand, and learned the importance of housing-first and job placement solutions.

Through my experience volunteering at Fanpu Nongchang, an organic farm in Chengdu, I learned about how environmental and economic factors affect food security issues in China, and the importance of community gardening and organic farming solutions.

Through the friendships I formed with my Chinese peers, including my Chinese roommate, 君如 (Junru), I challenged my own notions of freedom, democracy, and patriotism, and had conversations that challenged my learning in classrooms at South Carolina on these topics.
